Chair Shooting

This is one the best shooting drills because it helps to develop two critical aspects of shooting, proper use of the legs and one-piece shooting.  Many players make poor use of their legs when they shoot.  As discussed in an earlier article (Youth Development-Movement Skills - "Don't Tell Them to Bend Their Knees!") many players make the mistake of bending their knees first when going into their athletic stance or in this case, beginning to shoot.

Shooting-Learning to Hold the Basketball

The following is an excellent technique for teaching young players how to hold the basketball for their shot. Place the basketball on the floor just in front of the player. The player should form their hands like cups and then create the correct intersection with their thumbs as shown in the picture.

The Shooting Pocket

To enable young players to have success shooting the basketball later in their careers it is vitally important youth coaches get their players off to a good start by teaching the proper technique.  Another critical factor is the shooting pocket the position the ball should be held prior to the start of the shooting motion.

Shooting on a Line

It is often difficult with young players to have them focus on shooting technique when they shoot at a basket. "Shooting on a Line" is an effective drill to take the focus away from making a basket to improving technique.

Pick-up and Chase

Most young athletes love pursuit games. "Pick-up and Chase" helps young athletes work on their speed, while dribbling and shooting lay-ups. It also can help them realize the benefits of faking.

How to Hold the Ball

Shooting the basketball properly begins with the player holding the ball correctly. Coaches of youth players cannot leave it to the players to learn to hold the ball correctly without instruction.  However, the instruction must be brief and vivid so the players do not lose the message because of length or clarity.
