The Athletic Stance-"Don't Tell Them to Bend Their Knees"

It is difficult to be successful in sport without a proper athletic stance or posture.  By nature, most sports require movement; this movement begins from an 'athletic stance."  And while we would like every young athlete be able to naturally assume a proper athletic stance, the reality is that some kids are not blessed with natural "athleticism" and do not automatically "get into stance." 



Building the Athletic House-"Stack the Cones Relay"

We hope coaches take the approach that they are going to help each of their players become better athletes and help build their "athletic house."  Agility and quickness are key qualities in athletes; here is an excellent relay that can help to improve the athleticism of your players.

Stack the Cones Relay:

Divide your team into 3 groups of 4 and have the groups start on the baseline.



Teaching the 3 Man Weave

One of the most popular drills in basketball is the 3 Player Weave.  It is a common warm-up drill because it employs the skills of running, passing, and catching with lay-ups. 



2 Lane Passing Drills

Passing and catching on the move is often a challenge for young players because of strength and coordination. However it is such an important part of the game that it must be practiced each practice. 2 Lane Passing is easily organized and with modifications can be made more challenging for players.



Chair Drills-Reverse Pivots to Lay-ups

I believe pivoting is one of the most neglected skills in the game. It is imperative that young players are taught how to pivot and are given enough opportunities to repeat the skills of pivoting so that it becomes a habit.



3 Player Weave Back to 2 on 1

This drill can be used for elite level teams and by youth teams. The drill begins with O1, O2 and O3 weaving down the floor.
