Happy New Year to everyone and welcome to the 21st issue of Basketball BC’s coaching resource: “The Coaches Clipboard.” This issue contains the regular “A Few Set Plays”, “Just for You – Steve Nash Coaches”, “Skills and Drills of the Month”, and “Understanding the Rules” features. Also, within this issue is an article of random thoughts after observing Arizona State University Men’s practices, an interview with Capilano College and RC Palmer coach Paul Eberhardt, as well as an outstanding outline of “11 Characteristics of Great Coaches” from Frank Dick, the President of the European Athletics Coaches Association.
During the past month I had the opportunity to attend three men’s practices at Arizona State University and also watch many DVDs that have been recently purchased by Basketball BC. If you truly enjoying coaching basketball I believe attending practices and watching DVDs are two of best ways to continue to expand your knowledge and continue to grow as a coach. Mark Simpson, the Head Coach of defending Boys’ AAA champion Dover Bay, said in a recent “Time Out” interview “the thing I enjoy about coaching is the fact that I can become better as I age.” Learning new methods of teaching skills, new plays, hearing different philosophies, enhancing your knowledge of various defensive systems, etc. helps to keep you growing and enthused about coaching. It will enable you to bring new drills to practice to keep your players motivated and improving. After watching other coaches in practice or watching DVDs it may confirm what you believe, or it may force you to look at what and how you teach, or possibly even change what you do – all are very valuable. Spend a couple of hours every week expanding your knowledge and continue to grow as a coach – your players will be glad you did and you will enjoy the process.
Coaches, I hope you will enjoy this issue and find something that may help you, and as always, if you have questions, comments, or things you would like to see included, or if you have plays or drills you would like to include, please contact Mike McNeill at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
